"Ever since I was seven years old, the practice of Chinese brush painting has been a constant source of joy in my life. As I grow older, the joy has been strengthened by a feeling of pride. Through the practice of painting, I feel a bond with the glorious civilization which generations of my ancestors built. Additionally, I see how relevant Chinese art is to the Chinese way of life.
"From the time when I first started to read, I have been unable to resist any treatises on brush painting. I like to find out different methods to paint. I like to learn about the spirits, the stories, the romances, the poems and literature of the different subjects I paint. I like to hear from the artists whom I admire - their experiences and thoughts on their artistic pursuits.
"This manual was created for beginners who never have held a brush before, for those who never have had any art training. However, I do intend to cover enough information so that artists at different levels might find this manual helpful. I do have faith in the everlasting enchanting facets of Chinese brush painting. Beware: Through this manual, a simple wish of "I would like to paint a bird for my daughter" can easily be turned into "I would like to become the founder of a Chinese brush painting society in my community."
